Diagnosis and Assessment of Excessive Daytime Sleepiness
Kim Myeong-Kyu

Abstract
Excessive daytime sleepiness(EDS), the primary complaint of patients seen in sleep clinics, affects up to 12 to 43% of the general population. The effects of EDS can be debilitating and even life threatening. EDS can result from multiple causes such as insufficient nocturnal sleep, sleep fragmentation, primary disorders of sleep, circadian disorders and various drugs affecting sleepiness/wakefulness. A clear, detailed history is invaluable in negotiating these numerous diagnostic considerations. Various tools, self-report scales, performance tests and neurophysiologic tests, have been developed to assess sleepiness, but each of these has shortcomings. Investigators must recognize the limitations of the available methods and select them according to the clinical problem being addressed.
